After 4 years of waiting, the FIFA World Cup is here again with the first game kicking off between the hosts, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. The FIFA World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events in the World and it is where all the best players in the world come together to compete for football’s most prestigious trophy. In 2014, the World Cup had an estimated global in-home television audience of 3.2 billion people. The 2014 FIFA World Cup broke several TV audience records in key international markets, including Germany and the USA. Experts are predicting that viewing figures will be similar for this year’s World Cup, but stadium attendances may not be as high as 2014 due to concerns over people’s safety.
Adidas is one of the main sponsors for the FIFA World Cup and their partnership with FIFA is one of the longest and most successful in modern sports marketing history. FIFA and Adidas have been partners since 1970 and in 2013 Adidas and FIFA announced they would be continuing their partnership agreement. The new partnership agreement means Adidas will continue to have the rights to be the official Partner, Supplier and Licensee for the FIFA World Cup and all FIFA events until 2030. FIFA Marketing Director, Thierry Weil, said ‘Without the support of long-term partners such as Adidas, it would simply not be possible for FIFA to host global spectacles such as the FIFA World Cup’. Thierry also went onto say that ‘Adidas is an integral part of the FIFA World Cup story, quite literally featuring at the heart of the action at every tournament since the 1970 FIFA World Cup’.
